Widening the field

About this section

What happenshere

The subject range opens up, laboratory work begins, and students start to find the things they are good at — and the things they love.

Middle School is deliberately broad. Students meet the separate sciences in a laboratory for the first time, take up a second language, and choose from a wide programme of clubs and societies. This is the stage at which we expect students to begin taking responsibility for their own organisation — homework diaries, deadlines, equipment. The Junior Science Exhibition at the end of Grade 8 is the section's set-piece, and most students remember it years later.

At a glance

  • Separate sciences taught in dedicated laboratories
  • A second language from Grade 6
  • The Junior Science Exhibition in the third term
  • Club and society membership opens fully
